Compelled or Distracted
This week, Jacob Altemus leads us into the familiar story of Martha and Mary in Luke 10. While Martha rushes around the kitchen, anxious and distracted by all the preparations, her sister Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, listening to His words. When Martha complains, Jesus doesn’t scold her for serving — He lovingly redirects her heart.
“Martha, Martha,” Jesus says, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed — or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
In this sermon, we explore:
- Why we so easily become “distracted”.
- How good things (even ministry and hospitality) can become distractions when they pull us from Jesus.
- The gentle but powerful way Jesus calls us back to the one thing that matters most.
- Practical ways to choose the “better” part in our noisy, distracted world.
Whether you’re a busy parent, a driven professional, a ministry leader, or someone who just feels constantly pulled in a hundred directions, this story is an invitation to slow down, sit down, and listen. Jesus is inviting us to live from a place of rest and relationship rather than anxiety and exhaustion.
Are you more like Martha or Mary today? And what might change if you chose the one thing that cannot be taken away? Tune in for a refreshing, honest conversation that will help you realign your heart with what truly matters.
